Reviewer objection planning
Reviewer 2 Checklist: Stress-Test Your Manuscript Before Submission
Reviewer 2 is not always wrong. The useful move is to borrow the harshest plausible reader for an hour, find the manuscript’s weak joints, and fix the parts that deserve fixing.
Ask what the paper assumes but does not prove
Harsh reviewers attack hidden assumptions. Make those assumptions explicit and explain why they are reasonable for this research question.
- ✓What must be true for the central inference to hold?
- ✓What alternate mechanism could explain the pattern?
- ✓Which claim sounds stronger than the evidence allows?
Audit transitions between sections
Reviewers often object where the paper silently changes gears: from literature to hypotheses, from hypotheses to measures, or from results to implications.
- ✓Every hypothesis should have a mechanism, not just precedent.
- ✓Every model should connect to the stated research question.
- ✓Every implication should trace back to a result, not a hope.
Separate fixable weakness from fatal flaw
The goal is not paranoia. The goal is triage. Some weaknesses need a sentence, some need a robustness test, and some mean the manuscript is aimed at the wrong journal.
